Wales DTC WISERD Winners

The Wales DTC supported two competitions at last week’s WISERD Conference. The Learned Society for Wales sponsored a cash prize of £200 for the winner of our student poster competition, and we awarded a selection of recent books from two leading social science publishers (up to the value of £150) in our new “3MEI” three-minute engagement/impact session.

Michelle Jones, a Wales DTC student at Aberystwyth University, won the first competition with her poster presenting her work on encountering children in conflict zones.

Professor David James, director of the Wales DTC, said “Once again we saw an impressive display of student posters at the WISERD conference. All were good, but some really stood out. The judges felt that Michelle Jones’ poster did most to convey the essence of a researchproject with clarity and visual impact whilst avoiding over-simplification.”

Ceri Dalton (Bangor University) won our 3MEI competition. “This is a variant on the now well-established ‘three minute thesis’ format but with a focus on how the researcher meets challenges and/or successes with engagement or impact” explained Professor James.

“This lively session had four contestants, and the judges were unanimous that Ceri Dalton did most to meet the criteria.”
