Previous studies investigated the long-term language development of an English-Welsh bilingual with Rett Syndrome through means of a longitudinal study. Current research aims to expand this pilot study to collect data from further individuals with Rett Syndrome brought up in both monolingual and bilingual environments to discover what affect being brought up bilingually may have on language outcomes in the disorder.

In addition to an academic impact, results from a variety of tests of comprehension of language and grammatical concepts administered to both English-speaking monolinguals and English-Welsh bilinguals with Rett Syndrome may also be used to publish guidance offering advice to parents, teachers, and healthcare professionals on the best ways to approach language use around individuals with Rett Syndrome in order to improve communication opportunities for these individuals.
