Data-driven analysis has been a central component of the coverage of the COVID-19 crisis, at the same time as the datafication of political processes has accelerated, requiring new accountability mechanisms. This research seeks to build on the literature’s current understanding of data journalism and its role within the datafied society by exploring the evolving practice of journalism under the unique circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It explores the field of data journalism, its resonances with neighboring fields, and its activity with non-journalist peripheral actors, such as academics and civic technologists, to collaboratively hold algorithms and technology to account in the public space.
Overall, this research is concerned with the evolving practice of journalism and the growing attention to the implications of data-driven processes for democracy.
